10 Essential Tips for Training Your Dog, According to a Professional Trainer

Training your dog, whether it's a new puppy or an older dog needing a few refresher courses, can be both exciting and overwhelming. To help you navigate the process and ensure your dog becomes a well-behaved and skilled companion, professional dog trainer Gail Miller Bisher shares these expert tips. With her extensive experience in dog sports and obedience competitions, Bisher provides practical advice to make training smoother and more effective.

1. Have Regular Bathroom Breaks

  • Consistent bathroom breaks are crucial for potty training. Take your puppy outside at regular intervals to establish a routine. When they successfully go potty, give them enthusiastic praise to reinforce the behavior.

2. Create a Closed-Off Puppy Area

  • When indoors, confine your puppy to a designated area, such as a puppy pen. Allow them to explore other parts of the house only after they've been taken outside for bathroom breaks. This helps minimize the risk of indoor accidents.

3. Puppy-Proof Your Floors

  • Accidents are a natural part of training. To make cleanup easier and prevent odors, consider using stain and odor-resistant flooring options like LifeProof with PetProof Technology Carpet. Easy-to-clean surfaces help deter your puppy from frequenting the same spots.

4. Use Treats Only for Training

  • Reserve treats exclusively for training sessions. Avoid giving treats casually, as this can dilute their effectiveness as a reward. When used correctly, treats make training sessions enjoyable and motivate your dog to learn.

5. Be Consistent with Commands

  • Consistency is key in dog training. Ensure all family members use the same commands and terms. For example, decide whether to use "down" or "off" to discourage jumping and stick to it. Consistent language helps your dog understand and respond correctly.

With these tips, you'll be on your way to training your dog successfully and building a strong, positive relationship with your furry friend.

Golden Retriever's Custom, Luxury Doghouse Made from Converted Closet Under the Stairs

If MTV Cribs were to feature a canine reboot, Teddy's doghouse would undoubtedly steal the spotlight. Teddy, an adorable golden retriever from South Carolina, has captured hearts and gained viral fame on TikTok, thanks to his stunningly designed doghouse created by his owner.

Jonathan Lower, known on Instagram as John Lower The Home Project Guy, has turned an old utility closet under the stairs into Teddy's extravagant den. This luxury space includes a flat-screen TV, a cozy fireplace, and even a custom portrait of Teddy himself hanging above the mantle (yes, you read that right—'mantle')!

Lower, a real estate agent based in South Carolina, shared with Daily Paws that the idea for Teddy's dream doghouse came from a client walk-through. "During a showing, I saw a playhouse for the sellers' daughters under the stairs. It was just an open space with toys, but it sparked the idea of creating a doghouse exterior with a doggy door leading into that area," he explains.

Since being posted in mid-March, the video of Teddy's new digs has taken TikTok by storm, amassing over 3.5 million views and countless comments.

Selecting the Right Environmental Enrichment for Your Cat

Indoor cats require stimulation and recreation to stay mentally healthy. This concept, known as "cat enrichment" or "environmental enrichment for cats," involves providing various forms of mental and physical stimulation to keep your feline happy and prevent behavioral issues.

What is Cat Enrichment?

Cat enrichment means creating an environment that offers plenty of toys, hiding spots, perches, scratching areas, visual stimulation, and play opportunities. It also involves ensuring your cat has designated areas for eating, drinking, and using the litter box, all while feeling secure.

Keys to Environmental Enrichment for Cats

1. Refuge

  • Provide small, safe spaces where your cat can retreat and feel secure. Simple items like paper bags or cardboard boxes work well. Cats often prefer high places where they can observe their surroundings. Ensure they have spots to hide and rest undisturbed, especially in multi-pet households where they might need to escape from other animals.

2. Cat Furniture or Perches

  • Cats need vertical space to explore and feel secure. Consider adding perches or cat trees, which allow your cat to climb and observe their environment from above. These can range from simple shelves to elaborate cat trees with multiple levels. High spots are particularly important for sleeping and resting, giving cats a vantage point to watch for potential threats, even if they’re indoor cats. In multi-cat households, having several perches ensures that all cats have a place to claim.

3. Scratching Stimulation

  • Provide designated scratching areas to satisfy your cat’s natural instincts. Scratching helps cats mark their territory, stretch their muscles, and shed old claws. Offer a variety of scratching posts made from different materials such as cardboard, fabric, or carpet. Observe your cat’s scratching preferences—whether they prefer vertical or horizontal surfaces—and choose scratching posts accordingly. In multi-cat homes, place several scratching posts around to prevent competition and encourage proper scratching behavior.

4. Toys and Play Opportunities

  • Engage your cat with a variety of toys to keep them entertained and active. Interactive toys, such as feather wands or laser pointers, provide mental and physical stimulation. Regular play sessions also help prevent boredom and related behavioral issues.

5. Visual Stimulation

  • Cats enjoy watching the outside world, so providing a window perch can be a great source of entertainment. A window perch allows your cat to observe birds, squirrels, and other outdoor activities, enriching their environment with dynamic visual stimulation.

By incorporating these elements into your cat’s living space, you create a stimulating and satisfying environment that promotes their well-being and happiness.
