How to Keep Your Pets Safe During an Emergency
Natural disasters like hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods can strike unexpectedly and with little warning. That’s why it’s crucial to have a preparedness plan ready for these emergencies.
While you might already have a plan for your family, incorporating your pets into that plan is essential for ensuring the safety of everyone in your household. In the event of an evacuation, having a pet-inclusive emergency plan will help ensure that no one is left behind.
Ensure you and your pet are ready for any emergency with these essential preparation tips:
Prepare an Emergency Supply Kit
1. Food:
Store at least three days’ worth of pet food in an airtight, waterproof container. This ensures your pet will have adequate nourishment during an emergency.
2. Water:
Keep at least three days’ worth of water specifically for your pet, in addition to your own supply. This is crucial to ensure hydration in any situation.
3. Medicine and Medical Records:
Maintain an extra supply of all regular medications your pet takes, stored in a waterproof container. Also, include copies of your pet’s medical records for easy access.
4. Collar, ID Tag, Harness, or Leash
Ensure your pet wears a collar with a rabies tag and identification at all times. Include a backup collar, leash, and ID tag in your emergency kit. Consider discussing microchipping with your vet for permanent identification and enroll your pet in a recovery database.
5. Important Documents
Keep copies of your pet’s registration information, adoption papers, and vaccination documents in a clean plastic bag or waterproof container. This ensures you have access to important information when needed.
Is Your Dog Stubborn?

Are you finding it difficult to train your dog? Do you find yourself repeating commands with little to no response? If your dog seems to ignore you or deliberately disobey, you might be dealing with what seems like a stubborn pet. But is your dog really being obstinate, or is there another explanation for their behavior?
Understanding Stubbornness in Dogs
The term "stubborn dog" is often used to describe a pet that doesn’t respond to commands on the first try. This is different from a hyperactive dog that can’t sit still or a reactive dog experiencing an emotional outburst. Typical signs of a so-called stubborn dog include ignoring commands, refusing to come when called, or only obeying after multiple repetitions. It may seem as though your dog is intentionally disobeying, but this perception might be misleading.
Are Dogs Truly Stubborn?
Many dog owners interpret their pet’s behavior through a human perspective, especially when their dog doesn’t follow commands. Labeling a dog as stubborn often overlooks simpler explanations: the dog might not fully understand the command or may not see the benefit in obeying. Dogs make decisions based on what’s most rewarding for them. For instance, if coming when called means leaving a fun dog park, a dog might choose to ignore the command in favor of staying with their playmates.
Dogs respond to incentives and consequences. Just like you wouldn’t work without a paycheck, your dog needs a clear reason to follow your commands. While the bond you share is important, effective training involves teaching your dog both how and why to obey. This can vary in difficulty depending on the breed.
Which Breeds Are Considered "Stubborn"?
Certain breeds are often labeled as stubborn, such as the Afghan Hound, Parson Russell Terrier, Siberian Husky, and American Bulldog. You’ll frequently see breeds from the Terrier Group, Scenthounds, and Sighthounds on these lists. However, this doesn’t mean these dogs are truly obstinate. Instead, it reflects their inherent traits—like Bloodhounds being driven by their sense of smell or terriers being bred for independence.
The so-called stubbornness often relates to trainability rather than willful disobedience. Breeds like Labrador Retrievers and Border Collies, developed for cooperative work with humans, tend to be more responsive to training. Conversely, breeds bred for independent tasks might be less immediately responsive but aren’t inherently untrainable.
Overcoming Training Challenges
Owning a less trainable breed doesn’t mean you’re destined for constant frustration. Instead, it means you’ll need to put in extra effort to motivate your dog and make training rewarding. If you find yourself frustrated with what seems like stubborn behavior, consider these questions to better understand and address the issue:
Does your dog fully understand the command? Make sure your instructions are clear and consistent.
Is the reward for obeying sufficient? Ensure that your dog sees value in following commands.
Is there a competing distraction? Eliminate or minimize distractions during training sessions.
By examining these factors, you can better address your dog’s behavior and improve your training success. Remember, what might seem like stubbornness is often an opportunity to refine your approach and build a stronger bond with your pet.
Explaining Your Cat’s Greeting
One of the most delightful aspects of having a pet is the warm welcome you receive as soon as you walk through the door. Unlike dogs, cats have their own unique ways of greeting people, and understanding these behaviors can reveal a lot about how they feel about you and others.
The Purrrfect Greeting
When a visitor arrives, your cat might initially keep her distance. You might also notice that she greets each family member differently. Cats are naturally independent, so when they do make an effort to greet someone, it's a sign that they trust that person and consider them a part of their world. Cats have scent glands around their head and ears, and they often rub their heads against people or objects they value. This behavior is a way for them to mark their territory and become familiar with your scent. If a cat is assessing whether to trust someone, she might rub against their legs. However, if a person tries to pet her immediately, the cat might flee. Enjoy the cat’s rub as a sign of trust, but give her a moment before reaching out.
When a cat performs what’s commonly known as head butting, head bumping, or head bunting, she’s demonstrating a strong bond with you. This gesture is reserved for those she feels closest to, including her human companions and other pets. Unlike casual head rubbing, a head bump is a firm push from the cat’s head, symbolizing deep trust and affection. If your cat presses her head against yours, it’s one of the highest compliments she can offer.
The Upturned Belly
If your cat doesn’t greet you with a rub or head bump, she might roll over and show her belly instead. This behavior signifies that she feels safe and is comfortable being vulnerable. It’s important to note that exposing her belly isn’t necessarily an invitation for a belly rub. Instead, it’s a gesture of trust. When your cat greets you this way, speak to her softly but refrain from touching her right away. She may respond by rubbing against you or giving you a slow blink, which are additional signs of affection.
Understanding these subtle signals will help you better appreciate your cat’s unique ways of showing affection and trust.
