Thousands watch canines catch waves at World Dog Surfing Championships in Pacifica
On Saturday, Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica was packed with spectators for the World Dog Surfing Championships. Cacau, a chocolate Labrador from Brazil, won the "top surf dog" title with her owner, Ivan Moreira, impressing judges with their surfing skills.
Dogs from around the world, including Japan, showcased their talents despite challenging surf conditions. Cacau and Ivan navigated the waves expertly, earning cheers from the crowd.
The event, nearly derailed by high costs, was saved by donations. Around 6,000 to 7,000 people attended, arriving early to watch the action. Dogs competed in heats based on size and style, with some surfing solo, others with a buddy, and some with their owners.
Derby California, a 12-year-old Golden Doodle from San Diego, participated with his owner, Kentucky Gallahue. Gallahue noted, "Derby really took to surfing. It's great to ride the waves with your best friend and bring smiles to people."
The extra-large category was dominated by Labrador Retrievers, known for their love of water.
